Make it CALIFORNIA!

California is more dependent upon Asia-Pacific business than any other US state.

The United States will host the APEC 2011 process. Through CalAPEC, California business and governmental leaders will be directly involved in the planning, hosting and execution of the 2011 meetings.

California and the Pacific Coast are at the heart of Asia-Pacific innovation. We believe that our unique business, economic, and policy interests must play a leading role in APEC 2011.

This is a statewide effort.

Additional Background

What is APEC?

Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, or APEC, was established in 1989 as the primary intergovernmental forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investment in the Asia-Pacific region. Its Secretariat is in Singapore. Unlike the WTO or other multilateral trade bodies, decisions made within APEC are reached by consensus and commitments are undertaken on a voluntary basis. APEC has 21 members, referred to as "Member Economies," which account for approximately 40% of the world's population, approximately 56% of world GDP and about 48% of world trade.

How does APEC work?
APEC involves a series of senior-level meetings that follow a common format each year (see calendar in the sidebar ) and rotate annually among the member economies. Alongside the intergovernmental process, business leaders provide input through the APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC). The US committed to host APEC in 2011. The last time the US hosted was in 1993, with ministerial and summit meetings in the Seattle area. Hosts leading up to 2011: Peru (2008), Singapore (2009), Japan (2010).

How will my company or organization benefit from CalAPEC?
Leadership, visibility, and access. You will be publicized as a leader of APEC 2011, help craft its nature and host activities, and be first to know of speaking, sponsorship and hospitality opportunities. It's the best way to prepare for and benefit from APEC 2011.

What are CalAPEC deliverables and outcomes?
CalAPEC is working with the State Department, National Center for APEC, the APEC Secretariat, and municipal officials to secure one or more major meetings of APEC 2011.
